    collected in such great numbers, as to give rise to the popular notion of their having fallen from the clouds; and, in very hot weather, the young both of this species and the H. cingenda may be found in clusters adhering to the stalks of various plants, with the aperture closed by a thin pellicle, except where it is in contact with the plant. The Helix Scarabeus, in like manner, is sometimes found in such vast profusion, in the maritime plains of Amboina, that they are supposed by the natives to have fallen from the clouds in showers, whence Rumphius calls the species Cochlea Imbrium. 32.
