    It is also probable that the code is highly degenerate, i.e. that almost any triplet of bases codes for an amino acid in the (as yet undiscovered) protein responsible for the r^j+ phenotype. Between a + and a - mutation which cancel» the reading is shifted and is therefore functionally random# This can occur over about 20$ of the 33 gene, and yet a functional protein is produced. It is already known that this portion of the gene is non-essential. A deletion mutant (r 1583) exists which omits it, as well as a larger portion of the Ä gene. This imitant still has the B function. When an aeri dine mutation in the A gene is recoiabined with this deletion, the 3 function is lost. This provides additional evidence that the genetic message is read from one ends it is presumed that in r 1589 the genes are read together so that a reading error in one gene throws the other out of register as well#
