![that of any year since 1957o There is a slight increase in the number of births c illegitimate infants, as there is also in the number of deaths in this group,. The number of illegitimate live births as expressed as a percentage of the total live births, was 5<>34%o In addition to the Infant Mortality Rate and the Neo-Natal Mortality Rate figures have also been ascertained for the Early Neo-Natal Mortality Rate and the Perinatal Mortality Rate* This latter figure is the number of still births and deaths under one week per 1,000 total live and still births0 These two figures ar associated together, as it is believed that as a large number of infant deaths occ during the first week of life, there may be a common link between them and still birthso The Infant Mortality Rate as 31° 55 per thousand live births, shows a slig increase on the figure for 1959j, and. once again compares unfavourably with the fig for England and Wales* In all there were thirteen infant deaths, nine of which occurred in what is known as the neo-natal periodc The Death Rate of 10*7 per thousand of the population is unchanged when compared with the figure for 1959 and continues to present itself in a favourable comparison to the current figure for the country as a whole* A total of 567 deatl were registered, of which there were 181 males and 186 females. Coronary Disease and associated Vascular Lesions are the largest group, constituting in all 59% of deaths occuring amongst residents,. The position regarding deaths from Cancer re¬ mains more or less static, the number cf deaths occuring from all forms of this disease constituting approximately 1.6% of the total number of deaths* There were twelve deaths from Cancer of the Lung - nine males and three females* The number deaths from Accidents, including motor accidents, was nine, a decrease of five, 1 of these deaths were attributable to motor accidents and no less than six were amor persons ever 65 years0 There is a slight decrease in the number of deaths result: from Penumonia and Bronchitis, and only two deaths are reported as having occurred from. Pulmonary Tuberculosiso Both these deaths were in individuals over 65 years age0 It would appear that the value of early diagnosis of Tuberculosis, as provid through the Mobile X-Ray Service, and the subsequent prompt and effective treatmer is now appearing to prove its value„ There was one maternal death which gives a maternal mortality rate of 2C36, but this compares rather unfavourably with the figure of 0o39 for England and Wales* In this connection, it must be remembered + when dealing with very small numbers, as in this case, exaggerated comparisons maj easily be obtained,. There was a marked decrease in the incidence of Infectious Disease as ascertained from the notifications0 No case of Poliomyelities either paralytic ©1 paralytic was notified in the City during the year* This is but another silent testimony to the efficacy of the prophylactic measures taken over the past years* With the exception of Whooping Cough, Dysentery and Erysipelas where there has bee a small increase in the number of notifications, reductions have been noted in eve instance in the other notifiable diseasesQ During the year, there were in all on] 96 notifications compared with 214 in the previous year* Details of the findings of the Mass Radiography Unit as ascertained from their routine monthly visits have been supplied through the courtesy of Drc Moore, Director of the Unit* There was a considerable decline in the number of new cases] of Tuberculosis notified during the year, and it is hoped that at last the antioil reduction in the incidence of this disease is about to become apparent, resulting from, the energetic efforts over the last few years* The number of new cases notii](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b30282639_0004.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
