    mortality was, therefore, at the rate of 62 per 1,000 births, 19 per 1,000 lower than the previous year. The Infant Mortality in England and Wales was 65 per 1,000 births. In the Urban Districts there were 2,264 births, and 137 infant deaths. The infant mortality rate was, there- fore, 61 per 1,000 births, 38 per 1,000 lower than in the previous year. In the Rural Districts there were 1,548 births, 100 infant deaths, giving an infant mortality of 64 per 1,000 births, 7 per 1,000 higher than in the previous year. The mortality rate for legitimate infants was 59 per 1,000, that of illegitimate infants 128 per 1,000.
