![As each name was called the hall rang with plaudits. Mr. Henry Sheldon subscribed $1,000. Another gentleman expressed his desire to take $1,000 worth of Sanitary Commission stock, as it was a sound concern. The President said that this was a very good beginning. Mr. George B. Archer subscribed $1,000. The President expressed the extreme pleasure he felt in presiding over such a meeting. Then came some $500 subscriptions, among which were the names of Messrs. J. W. Frothingham and Stranahan. There were at least a dozen gentlemen on the floor at one time, each waiting to have his name put down. The President, beaming with jollity, said, with a twinkle in his eye, that he did not think the preliminary proceedings in Boston were any better than these. [Immense applause.] Rev. Dr. Farley spoke at some length in regard to the merits of the Sanitary Commis- sion, which he said stood forth as the acknowledged instrument of healing for the men who had gone forth to fight our battles. Ex-Mayor Hall moved that a committee be appointed to call on every citizen in Brook- lyn for a dollar subscription. The President said that a committee for the purpose had already been appointed. lie suggested the appointing of ward committees. Mr. Frothingham spoke in favor of Mr. Hall's suggestion and moved that it be referred to a committee. A motion was made to adjourn. Alex. Wallace said that he hoped the President would not allow the meeting to adjourn, as there were a large number of gentlemen present who wished to contribute. Mr. Seymour L. Husted contributed $1,000. [Long continued applause.] Mr. W. H. Lyon subscribed $250, and was followed by a number of other gentlemen. Some other gentlemen then went into the $500 business again. Agentleman at the lower end of the hall stated that he was authorized to say that a gentleman present wished the Secretary to put him down for $1,000. Immense excitement and cries of Name him, Who is it ? The Gentleman—E. T. II. Gibson. [Long-continued applause.] The use of the hall of the Polytechnic was tendered by I. II. Frothingham, Esq., free of cost. He was followed by a gentleman who made the same offer in regard to the Packer Institute. Mr. Chittenden said he had, in Connecticut, a pair of Devon steers in tolerable condi- tion, which he would make as fat as possible on Yankee corn, and present to the Fair. A motion was made to adjourn, but withdrawn. The subscriptions then commenced again. After a number of gentlemen had subscribed, remarks were made by various gentlemen, and the meeting adjourned till Tuesday evening, at the Academy of Music.
