    S [JEEE Y. To Her Majesty\s Justices of the Peace for the County of Surrey^ in the Easter General Quarter Session, 1871, assembled. The Committee of Visitors of Brookwood Asylum, in presenting tlieir Eeport as to the management of the Asylum during the year 1870, have to state as follows :— There were, at the commencement of the year, 303 male and 317 female, total 620 patients in the Asylum. During the year 98 males and 88 females, total 186, were admitted ; 35 males and 51 females, total 86, were discharged; and 49 males and 34 females, total 83, died. Of the 86 discharges, 63 were on recovery, 2 were in cases relieved, and 21 were patients not improved. There remained in the Asylum at the end of the year a total of 637 patients, whereof 317 were males and 320 females, leaving a margin for 4 males and 9 females. At the time there were applications for more than the space afforded, which was immediately filled, and although all patients who were chargeable elsewhere were removed in order to make the utmost provision for County cases, it became necessary before February, 1871, expired, to refuse 13 females. The weekly charge to Unions, &c., was 10s. ^d. per patient throughout the year. We have audited the Accounts and found them correct; a very full statement thereof is appended hereto. It will be seen that the income has exceeded the expenditure, and we are thus enabled to hope that ere long it will be in our power to reduce the charge to Unions.
