The human body can neither aft nor make any effort, without a very evi- dent contraftion of thofe parts, which are fituated near the diaphragm and the reftus mufcle of the abdomen.—With¬ out this contraftion, the body would become incapable of thofe fpontaneous and neceffary efforts, to which it is deter¬ mined, either by the influence of the will, or the idea of its own fafety.
