About this work

Description

A photomicrograph of a section through the pancreas of a patient with cystic fiborosis, immunolabelled for insulin (brown), nuclei stained blue. Exocrine tissue has been lost and replaced by fibrotic or adipose tissue in which the islets remain with a normal complement of endocrine cells. The patient was treated with insulin, but the beta-cell mass remained unchanged and amyloid is present, suggesting the presence of Type II diabetes. There is disruption of islet architeccture.
