    to the Houfe of the Perfon to be Inoculated; The Patient being in a warm Chamber, the Operator makes a flight Incifion into the Arm and Leg, little more than Skin deep, and then takes a Bit of Lint dipt in the infed- ed Matter, and puts it into the Wound ; or elfe drops a fmall Quantity of the Variolous Mat¬ ter diredly into it, taking care to mix it with the Blood. The Part is then cover’d with a Plaifter of Diachylon, to keep it clofe for a Day or two, and is then dreft from Time to Time, like an Iflue. Tis not my Defign in this Place to fliew the Effeds of this Operation upon the Patient, the Reader may exped them in the following Narrative; I (hall only obferve, that the Di- ftemper proves generally of the fame Kind with that of the Perfon, from whom the Va¬ riolous Matter is deriv’d ; that tho’ in the Le¬ vant the Inoculated had feldom above twen¬ ty or thirty Puftules, in New England few efcaped without fome hundreds; and Mr. Mait¬ land fays fome of his Patients have had two thoufand *; but whether they have more or lefs, they are never pitted, except in the Places of Incifion, fo that the Complexion is always preferved j that fometimes the Patient has no Puftules, but about the place where the Inci- fions are made, and ’tis generally obferved, that the greater the Difcharge of Matter at the Incifions, the fewer are the Irruptions in other places; and fo on the contrary.
