![the lower cover also lettered ‘Register’. Headings and many marginal notes in red, illustrated with numerous rough pen-drawings, mostly in red, of alchemical apparatus. The date 1506 is given at the end of a receipt for ‘ Vitriolum Romanum’ on fol. 28 v . Some of the marginal notes seem to be by a different and rather later 16th cent, hand. The first and last leaves are pasted down on the covers. On the second leaf is written ‘Doct[oris] Anonimi’. Inside the upper cover ‘No. 10. Johannes Keirast [?] Ma[gister ?] P[har- maciae ?]’, in a 16th cent. hand. Purchased 1930. (56309) 24. — Collection of alchemical receipts and processes: in German. 86 [88] 11. 4to. 21 x 15^ cm. [c. 1525.] Vellum covers with flap from fragmentary leaves of a 14th cent. Latin Bible, upper cover wanting. Ff. 55 and 64 wanting. The original foliation, 1-80 with 7 unnumbered leaves is inaccurate, as the leaf after fol. 29 was dropped in the numbering. On the first leaf a large U in red, headings underlined in red: illustrated with numerous small water-colour drawings of alchemical apparatus, etc. The text begins: ‘ Uer merckt die khunst / der arbaitten will der / sol sein haymblich . . .’ On the last leaf is a table of alchemical and chemical signs. Written in a clear gothic letter, 17 lines to a page. Ornamental capitals in red, green and blue. Text within a double red rule. Fol. i v Amicis meis in Jesu fratribus Dei dilectis / vocatis Sanctis Religiosis monasterii huius / optimis gratiam vobis et pacem a Deo . . . 3, line 3 ... audite me in timore Do / mini Oracula, Spiracula, Miracula ejus docebo vos in nomine Jesu. / Exponite t 7 [plumbum] minerem Minervae, ni / gram fere Magnesiam . . . 3 V (End) ... et laetabimur in / salutari ejus. Gloria in excelsis DEO. 4 TIAPEPrON // In Nomine Jesu Salvatoris Im / molati pro sanitate mundi et gloria coeli. / Recipe © [Vitriolum] Armeniaci £ [Sulphuris] nativ[i] . . . 6 ... et benedicet omnes / actiones vestras in sacrosancti nomine / Jesu. In the above, signs are used for the chemical substances, and ‘Jesu’ is designated by a cruciform figure in red and yellow with a superimposed four-pointed star containing 5 Hebrew letters. The work has not been identified. With its pious language and scripture quotations it resembles some of the pseudo-Lullian tracts. [Cf. Thorndike’s ‘History of Magic and Experimental Science’, Vol. IV.] The script seems to be of the 16th cent, or even later, while the symbols used for the various substances also appear to belong to a period after 1500.
