![1 ; Y SORA de az i , 1 P ] , , * OXTX Mr. Bacrogp's LETTER RELATING Coafling Part.of England, in a fmall portable Volume bourid and printed on Velam, or rather Parchment, by Winken de Word An. 1520. 'Lhis is the firft I have feen of that kind, altho' before as well as fince fuch Maca Charts were made by hand for the Benefit of Pilots. I cannot make any thing of Leland's Sketch of London, (for fuch I take it to be,) but I do not at all doubt but he in- tended a farther Draught, and put this down only by way of Memorandum, to be improv'd by him as he had leifure ; and tis very likely that there was a much more confiderable and more.accurate one in his Antiquities of London, that I before fpoke of. 4 Vhether that View of London in fix Sheets cut in Wood (which by the Spelling feems to have been done in. Holland, and 3 which fort I have feen three) be the firft finifhed Draught, I canhot as yet determine. But this I am füre of, that the Arms of King James have been placed. therein fince the firít Cutting. There is. uoto Draught of London, different from. the former, of one Sheet, cut - alfo in Wood; f! he next that. bath come to my Knowledge is one of a Sheet engraven on Copper, which hb feems to me to be the beft, and perhaps the moft ancient. ^ This takes in. only London, and the.Liberties of the fame, that is, from T'emple-Bar to Sr. Katherine's, and the Bank Side in Southwark. -.. More of the oid Part of London is feen by this than by any other, and in my opinioa 1t comes neareft to that Defcription of London, intended by our Judicious Antiquary Mr. John Leland of any tliat are extant :: and. it may be few have feen more of this nature than my felf. The next Draught for its Antiquitv 1 fhall take notice of is that püblifhed in the Cities of the World in three Volumes by George Braun:and Francis Hogenbergius anno 1573. n - this Draught the City of London is reprefented in one Sheet, which takes in the City of Weftminfter with the Tower to the Slaughter-Houfe, and has the Arms of Queen Elizabeth, and the City of London. . By this yon may perceive the Naked- nefs of the Buildings on ihe Bank Side, as alfo in the Out- parts of: the City from Eaít to Weft, uiz. St. Giles's in the Fields ftanding by it felf with Trees around : Paris Garden (at firft called Palace Garden) jaft againftthe Court of Bride- well, being a Pleafure. Garden of Retirement, formerly be- longing to the Grey-Fryers, and with them exchang'd for And here i cannot omitt to obferve how large a number: of Convents of Fryers, and other Ecclefiafticks was at that time in and about this City.
