![BIOLOGICAL BACKGROUND itself, an entity, a force, something that itself does things—^an error that has induced clouds of misconception. Possibly we should be better off with no such concept as heredity ; then analysis would be correctly directed toward understanding, in organisms as in other things, in what ways there is dependence on the stuff they are made of : in what ways on the conditions in which that stuff is found. As to the dependence on the stuff that they are made of, research has shown that the substances passed from parent to offspring, giving rise to the phenomena of inheritance, are a great number of discrete packets of diverse chemicals, embedded in a less diversified mass of material.
