![BIOLOGICAL BACKGROUND has many sets of innate or here¬ ditary characters ; the conditions under which he develops determine which set he shaU bring forth. The characteristics that appear under training are as much inherited char¬ acters as are those appearing under other conditions ; for the conditions help determine the characters in the one case as in the other. These sweep¬ ing statements are substantiated by precisely-known facts in many organ¬ isms. To grasp the bearing of these facts, one must keep in mind what sort of characteristics are called hereditary or inherited.
