![Graphic Representation of the Quantivalence OR Atomicity op the Elements. The quantivalence of an element may be repre- sented graphically by fixing to its symbol arms corre- sponding in number to the degree of its atom-fixing power. A monad is represented as possessing one arm, a dyad as possessing two arms, a triad as possess- ing three arms, and so on ; thus : Monad _ - H — It is scarcely necessary to caution the student against supposing that elements actually have arms projecting from them ; all that we know is that such an element as oxygen possesses twice the atom-fixing ])0wer of hydrogen, and the graphic symbols serve the purpose of showing how one atom of oxygen is capable of uniting with two atoms of hydrogen ; they represent in a manner that at once appeals to the mind of the](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b22651597_0045.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
