OF THE PICKWICK CLUB, FIRST ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITIONS, complete in the original 19/20 numbers, engraved title, frontispiece, and 41 illustrations by Seymour, Buss and “ Phiz” [H. K. Browne}, addresses appear in nos. 2, 3, 10, 15, 17, 18 and 20, and all the numbers are dated 1836; all the parts ure the earliest issue with all the advertisements, with the eacep- tion of three and possibly four slip advertisements hereafter mentioned ; threenumbers have names on front cover, and the back strips of a few numbers have been skilfully repaired, ali the plates are in the early states; the plates in parts 2 to 9 are the very earliest states before the additions and ve-biting ; part 10 to 19/20, contain the first set of plates etched by “ Phiz” for those particular numbers ; “ Phiz” etched two separate sets of plates, as the demand for the work was so enormous ; the whole enclosed in a morocco silk-lined case, lettered 8vo. Chapman and Hall, 1836-7 The following are some of the additional principal “ points” of this copy :— Part I. The plates are the jist set etched by R. Seymour, (He etched two sets of four plates and states this fact in his diary.) Outside front wrapper “with four illustrations by Seymour,” inside blank ; the excessively rare advertisement of 41]. of New Works published by Chapman & Hall, dated March, 1836, and advertising (inter alia) “The Garland of Love,” and No. I of “The Library of Fiction.” The last page of the letterpress is headed ‘‘ Posthumous Papers, ete.” Back wrapper, inside blank ; outside, announces the publication of No. I of “The Library of Fiction.” The text to this part is the first issue and is of extreme rarity. Parr Il. Ontside front wrapper ‘‘ With four illustrations by Seymour,” inside, blank; the rare printed address announcing the death of Sey- mour ; inside back wrapper, blank ; outside announces the publication of No. Il of “ The Library of Fiction.” Part III. Outside front wrapper “ with illustrations by R. W. Buss,” inside, blank; a slip advertisement, 2 Il., advertising ‘‘ Sunday under Three Heads”; the address announcing the engagement of Buss as illustrator ; inside back wrapper, blank ; outside announces the publi- cation of No. III of “The Library of Fiction.” This copy does not contain the advertisement of 2]l. headed “The Toilet,” advertising Rowland & Sons’ Toilet Preparations. Part ITV. Outside front wrapper (and in all the remaining parts) “ with illustrations,” inside a list of new works published by Chapman «& Hall, commencing “ Sunday under Three Heads”; The Pickwick Advertiser, 2 ll. ; inside back wrapper, a continuation of Chapman & Hall’s advertisement, beginning with “ Chess for Beginners”; outside advertises “The Library of Fiction,” to be continued monthly, but not giving the particular number of the same. The fact that there is no number 17 in the Albemarle Street address of Murray’s List of New Books is an additional proof of the earliest issue. Part V.
