![The production in another language of a book which has earned a great reputation in its own is a task of some responsibility. My main object throughout has been to follow the author’s method, and to convey his meaning as correctly as I could; but I have allowed myself so much freedom as seemed to be consistent with this, and, in one way or another, desirable. For the new matter I am alone responsible. It is in every instance enclosed within square brackets [ ]. I have collected the references and placed them in order at the end; they thus form a very full Bibliography. The Appendix by Professor Stirling will be of great advantage to the English reader. I have to acknowledge the courtesy of Professor v. Jaksch, who sent me the advanced sheets of the Second German Edition as they left the press, and his kindness in answering many inquiries. I am indebted to Dr. Eobert Maguire for much assistance, and also to Mr. Edgar Crookshank and Dr. Luff. My thanks are especially due to Professor Stirling for the ti’ouble which he has taken in revising the proofs. Finally, I would testify my gratitude to the publishers, Messrs. Charles Griffin & Company, for the care with which they have prepared the volume for the press, and for the substantial aid which they have given me. Welbeck Street, AV.
