![to me when I composed my article in the T'oung Pao, prove moreover that the firft reaftion of Gabet’s and Hue’s colleagues, when they heard of the journey to Lhasa, was even more unfavourable than I had thought. The two travellers were making complaints againft the Chinese commissioner for Lhasa, and Gabet will insift on this point again when he is travelling with A. R. Johnfton from Hong-Kong to Galle Point ; but the real reason why Gabet returned to Europe so quickly was that he hoped to get the Tibet mission reftored once more to the Lazarifts and to become himself the firft Apoftolic Vicar of Lhasa. He thus put himself into complete opposition to his Bishop, Mgr. Mouly ; the latter, in sending one of his priefts, J. F. Faivre, to Rome several months later, entrufted him with detailed inftruftions, dated May ioth, 1847, in which what follows is particularly to the point. “ Letters lately brought by courier inform us that M. Gabet left la ft November for Europe, where he has gone to requeft for himself the Vicariate of Tibet Seeing . . . that M. Gabet went without orders, on no suggeftion, real or inferred, from his superior, the bishop, who is both Apoftolic Vicar and visitor [of the Lazarifts], and whom he did not deign to consult . . . you alone are our representative, and you alone muft be regarded as such . . . We feel that the little Company [of Lazarifts] cannot and ought not to assume responsibility for Tibet. This vicariate, far away from our own, has already been given to other missionaries, who are ftationed near Tibet ; its Vicar Apoftolic has probably been consecrated and has probably begun his duties . . .
