    the most apalling effect. For over hve years it had been my privilege to be associated with him in his work. During that time our intercourse both officially and privately had been of the most pleasant description, and he always extended to me the greatest kindness and courtesy. By the Staff and Patients he was universally beloved, and all could rely upon receiving the most ready assistance and unvary¬ ing consideration. Thus cat off on the threshold of his life’s work, he left us deeply missed and regretted. Dr. Beaver who was promoted as Senior Assistant, resigned his appointment in October, to enter into private practice, and leaves during the present month. Dr. Dunn, at present Assistant to the West Biding Asylum at Wake¬ field, has been appointed as his successor. Dr. Johnston, who had some Lunacy experience at the Leicester County Asylum, was appointed Junior Assistant, and entered upon the duties of his office in November last. To both gentle¬ men I gladly tender my thanks for their ready and loyal assistance. It was with regret that you accepted the resignation of Miss Crowter, who for over five years had been your Head Female Attendant, and who has been appointed in a similar capacity to the Wilts County Asylum. Miss Bearpark, from the Winson Green Asylum, has been appointed to the vacancy. From Mr. Nicholls, your Clerk and Steward, I have the most willing and reliable assis¬ tance, and my earnest thanks are due to him for his unstinted and untiring endeavours to assist me in everything that tends to the welfare of the institution. The conduct of the subordinate staff has with few exceptions been excellent, and much credit is due to all the Attendants and Nurses for the manner in which they have carried out their most trying and oft times irritating duties. To you, Gentlemen, I beg to tender my most sincere thanks for the confidence you have reposed in me, and for the support and assistance you have invariably extended to me in this my first year of office as your Medical Superintendent.
