    harbour about three hours before, rose suddenly to the height of seven or eight feet perpendicu- lar, recoiled, and rose again three successive times in the course of a few minutes; in the same niianner it is remembered to have done at the time ot the earthquake that destroyed old Lisbon. January 24. The port letters of yesterday are filled with melancholy recitals of the damage done by the violent storm of Thursday and Friday last. It appears that the gales exceeded in violence, not only those at the close of the last month, but all that have been known in the memory of man. At Falmouth and Plymouth, on Thursday night, the firing of guns as signals of distress were heard from hour to hour.—Our Channel Fleet, we are sorry to state, has suffered much. Earthquake in Scotland, in March. Several shocks of an earthquake have been felt atComrie, in Perth- shire during the present month. On Sunday the 4th, there was a slight shock, with several sub- terraneous noises. On Sunday the 11th, there was another more violent, attended with a crackling ' interrupted sound ; and on Wednesday the 14th, at two o’clock in the morning, there was another smart shock, the horror of Avhich was increased by the darkness of the night, and violent showers of rain. On the evening of the preceding Tues- day huge clouds, apparently charged with electric fluid, hung over the place. Dreadf ul Storm of Thunder, Manchester, Alayi- A more awful and tremendous storm of thunder- and lightning was never experienced in the me- mory of the oldest person living, than that whici occurred last Thursday night, in this county an Cheshire ; and the damage sustained is almost i* credible. The thunder was succeeded by irnme»c torrents of rain and hail. Not tar from Warq^ ton, on the Cheshire side, a bolt fell which great injury, and by which one person in cular suffered severely in liis property. At®*'
