![The following are extracts from his other letter to Mi\ lling, to zvhich Dr. J Fall alludes. I ought long ago to have thanked you for your ohlighig present oF the first part of your Treatise on the Cow-])ox; but a great variety of-engagements prevented me. I have been extremely pleased with the perusal of your im- partial history of this invaluable diiscovery; and your firm and' manly d.efencc of it against ca- lumny and detraction. I hope the general voice of the nation, speaking in Parliament, will give its sanction to tlie merits of our excellent i'riend Dr, Jenner, by remuuerating in the best way it can, for it never can render an ade- quate compensation, the eminent services which he has conferred on the state. *' From the day when I first received inti- mation of Dr. Jenner's discovery, to the pre- sent hour, my opinion has never varied; though cases, exciting scepticism in some gentlemen have occurred. Many of theiti have been ex- plained ; and others might, I have no doubt, had it been possible to develqpe the whole pro- gress of the several cases. Accept, Sir, my thanks for the exertions which you have made in this great cause; and though I have not the pleasure of your per- sonal acquaintance, assure yourself, that I feel every sentiment of regard for a gentleman, who has proved himself so eminently the promoter of medical science,' directed to its best end, the preservation of the lives of millions. 1 am, c^c.
