    HE cottage is the type of house most widely preferred, both in town and country. Scotland’s traditional domestic architecture is rich in examples of simple but well-designed and dignified cottages (I and 2). In the late nineteenth century, however, this fine tradition became obscured by the gross accumulation of congested tenements in our larger towns and cities and between the wars by drab blocks of flatted houses which comprised 60 out of every 100 houses built by local authorities. But here and there one finds a revival of our traditional skill in designing modern cottages artistically which is perhaps best displayed in the longer terraced blocks which give dignity and scale SRY EO ey VEMY SS
