Murray ... and James Phillips, 1792 £4 4s 4to. 90 pp. Recent half calf. Woodcuts. Corner torn from top of pp. v-vi to the loss of a few words of text. Beddoes printed this. poem in the year he resigned his readership in Chemistry at Oxford. An interesting account and analysis of it is given in Stock’s Memoirs of Beddoes, 1811. It was written to prove to some of his friends, to whom he showed it anonymously, that the poetical style of Erasmus Darwin could be per- fectly well imitated, & it succeeded in deluding them. The discursiveness of the matter is worthy of the author, ranging from the religion, manufactures, and antiquities of the Hindoos to a disquisition on ex- plosives. Lastly he deprecates the settlement of the British in India. There are copious prose notes. The book is very uncommon, & seems not to have been actually published. Typographically it presents great interest. It was printed by a young woman in a remote village, & the bold and attractive woodcuts are by “‘ an uneducated & uninstructed artist ” in the same village. He founded his work on Bewick. 307 Bell (Sir Charles) Essays on the Anatomy of Expression. London, Longman, Hurst, etc., 1806 £3 3s Ato.
