A series of woodcut initial letters throughout the text. Second Latin edition of one of the most important medical works of antiquity. Paulus Aegineta (625- 690) was the last of the Byzantine physicians. He left this most interesting account of medicine of the period. His main fame rests, perhaps, on what he did in surgery and midwifery, and sometimes he has, indeed, been called the founder of obstetrics. He dealt at length with the diseases of the heart, poisoning from animals’ bites and certain vegetables. His theory on the gout should be mentioned and his remarkable contributions to dentistry (see detailed account of this by Guerini and Sudhoff). “Paul gives original descriptions of lithotomy, trephining, tonsillotomy, paracentesis and ampu- tation of the breast. He gives the fullest account we have of the eye surgery and military surgery of antiquity.’ (Garrison). 477 Paulus Aegineta. Cloth. 280 pp. Pavy was Claude Bernard’s pupil, but opposed the latter’s view that the liver is the storehouse of carbo- hydrates. He had a large practice of diabetic cases in London, which he treated successfully.
