OnE of the first effects of the improper use of ar- tificial light is a degree of subacute, or chronic in- flammation of the lining membrane of the eyelids. This mucous membrane, which in health is of a white or very pale rosy tint, when inflamed be- comes injected with blood, and of a deep red co- lour, as may be seen by drawing down, and gently everting the lower lid, so as to expose its inner sur- face. When this disease exists in a slight form, it gives but little uneasiness during the day-time ; but at night, when the eyes are employed on ob- jects illuminated by a candle or other artificial light, they become hot, watery, and irritable; the lids feel
