![C7] which the parts are not ina state to bear ; and if an instrument is unskilfully passed, | it will increase the swelling, and bring on a complete retention of urine. As the vessels of the prostate gland are liable, in the advanced stages of life, to be- come enlarged, whenever I am consulted in a case of this kind, I immediately re- commend the patient being cupped on the loins. This is very commonly objected to, on account of a prejudice, that has gone abroad against taking blood from people at an advanced period of life: this objection should, however, in the present disease be over-ruled, since in many cases, by bleed- ing from the loins, without resorting to any other means, the symptoms have been entirely removed. A gentleman 85 years of age, who had had a paralytic attack of a slight kind, con- sulted. me about a frequency in making water, which was most distressing in the night.
