![Hackney Carriages In 1960 the Borough Council again decided that 30 hackney carriages were adequate in meeting the needs of the district. Thif figure has remained unaltered for many years past. Before granting these licences, each vehicle was subjected 1 the usual detailed examination and certified as being roadworthy 1 the Consulting Engineers who weire appointed and paid by the Corporation. This arrangement of apnu^l inspections of hackney carriages begun some years ago, has operated to great advantage ii ensuring that licences were granted only in respect of vehicles which were mechanically fit and safe for public service. All licei 1 vehicles were of post war manufacture and proprietors tend to maki* frequent changes in order to keep,,their cafs up^to-date. Licences were granted in' respect of 34 hackney carriage driis. As a measure of control designed to safeguard the public, ei driver must satisfy^ the Council as to his medical fitness to drivi hackney carriage. ! > I Some 193 visits were made in 1960 by the District Public Heilh Inspectors in connection with licensing, for the purpose of | examination of vehicles on the ranks, for cleanliness, and generaij to check on the. observance of the Byelaws. A few complaints were received alleging contraventions of tt Byelaws, but upon investigation none was deemed to be of any substance. It is satisfactory to be able to report that this public service was operated efficiently throughout the year. Licensing of Game Dealers Five licences were granted by the Corporation authorising i dealers to buy and sell game. Registries for Female Domestic Servants No contraventions of the Byelaws dealing with this matter w|^ observed. Visits were made to the three, domestic servant agencies] for the purpose of inspecting records of application® from employlf of servants. Registration of Dealers in Old Metals and Marine Stores There are five premises within the Borough where the busine j of dealing in old metals is transacted. In accordance with Sectiof6 of the Public Health Amendment Act, 1907, records must be kept iw relation to articles purchased by such dealers.
