This proposition is absolutely denied. [There are several points of view from which the value or otherwise of vaccination as a protection against smallpox may be regard- ed. They are: 1. The direct inoculation test. 2. A comparison of the prevalence and mortality of smallpox for sufficiently long periods before and after the scientific discovery of vaccination. 3. A comparison of the liability to small- pox of particular groups of persons (e. g., physicians, nurses, and helpers about smallpox hospitals who, deprived of such advantages as isolation, etc., come into constant contact with smallpox, relying solely on vaccination for protection) with the liability thereto of the general public. 4. Experience of the modifying effect of vaccination during epidemics. 5. A comparison of the mortality from smallpox in vaccinated and non-vaccinated communities respectively. I.
