    gnarled roots of the old beeches in the avenue strike one with admiration and with melancholy ; the still vigorous trees, the growth of centuries, seem to mock at the short life of man ; succeeding generations walk beneath the same shadow, and the narrow vault near by receives them successively, and their place knows them no more but as name-links in the old pedigree. Yet who is there can live within the walls where his forefathers have dwelt without feeling in some sort more than commonly united with the past ? Sentiments of reverence impress us ; the spirits of those who have gone before may still seem to hover about the old familiar place, and we cannot be surprised if superstitions attach them- selves to the scene; — and truly at Fyne Court A sense of mystery the spirit daunted, And said as plain as whisper in the ear — 'The place is haunted!' This was the birth-place of Andrew Crosse, the Electrician. But a few words about the family, who, like their house, were old and curious. There is a tradition that the first of the family who settled in England was a Norman thane, who came over, of course, with William the Conqueror, and whose name was Odo de Santa Croce.
