    PREFACE \ TO THE SECOND EDITION. The origin and progress of that species of inventions with which the world has been amused under the form of Tales, have been discussed in such a variety of forms, and by men whose taste and research eminently qua- lified them for the task, that any minute en- quiry here concerning them is altogether un- necessary. On the present occasion, therefore, it will be sufficient to observe, that Tale writ- ing took its rise in the east; from whence, through the medium of Persia, it spread, in
