Tales that had survived so long a period, and that have exercised the wit and amused the fancy of so many Poets of various nations, came to me sufficiently recommended; and stood in need, I conceived, of little apology. Vet many who have thought favouiably of this small volume, have lamented that I did not employ the talents, which they are pleased to think it exhibits, on better materials, and o'ive the world an original work. But this is a task, to which if I could bring sufficient ability, I happily want leisure to pertorm. ]VIy path in search of fame was early marked out to me; the way was long, and the acclivity steep; and although I have found it neither barren of fruits nor of flowers, it has yet its dreary spots; and the trifle heie offered to public attention must be considered as the
