King Henry III. was s. by his eldest son, as EDWARD THE FIRST, b. in 1239; crowned 19 Aug. 1274 ; m. 1st, Eleanor, dan. of Ferdi¬ nand III., King of Castile, by whom he had surviving issue, Edward, created Prince of Wales soon after his birth. Eleanor, m. 1st, Alphonso, King of Arragon; and 2nd]y, Henri, Comte de Bar, in Champagne, France. By the latter the Princess Eleanor was mother of a dau., the Lady Eleanor, who m. Llewelyn ap Owen, Lord of South Wales, Representative of the Sovereign Princes of South Wales, and had a son, Thomas ap Llewelyn, Lord of South Wales, who m. Eleanor, dau. and heir of Philip ap Ivor, Lord of Cardigan, by the Princess Catharine, his wife, dau. of Llewelyn ap Griffith, Prince of North Wales, {see King John,) and had two daus. and co-heiresses: the younger, Margaret, m. Meredith ap Tudor, and was mother of Sir Owen Tudor, grandfather of King Henry VII.; the elder, Eleanor, m. Griffith Vychan, Lord of Glyndwrdwy, in Merioneth, Representative of the Sovereign Princes of Powys, and had two sons, Owen ap Griffith Vychan, Lord of Glyndwrdwy, the memorable Given Glendower, in whom vested the representation of the three sovereign lines of Powys, North Wales, and South Wales. Tudor ap Griffith Vychan, Lord of Gwyddelwern, in Merioneth; upwards of 20 years old 3 Sept. 10 Richard IL, 1386, when, under the designation of “ Tudor de Glendore,” he appeared as a witness in the Scrope and Grosvenor Controversy. From Tudor ap Griffith descend, by maternal representation, the Hughes’s of Giverclas, Barons of Kymmer-yn-Edeirnion, represented in the male line by William Hughes, Esq., son of the late Wilhara Hughes Esq. of Pen-y-Clawdd, CO. Denbigh. {See Hughes of Gwerclas, Burke’s Landed Gentry.) Margaret, m. to John, Duke of Brabant. Joan, of Acres, tn. 1st, to Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester; and after his decease, to Ralph de Mon- thenner. Mary, a nun. Elizabeth, m. 1st, to John, Earl of Holland, Zealand, and Lord of Friezland ; and 2ndly, to Humphry de Bohun, Earl of Hereford and Essex. By the latter, the princess had issue, John, Earl of Hereford, Lord High Constable, K.B.; d. s. p. in 1335. Humphrey, Earl of Hereford, Lord High Constable, K.G.; d. unm. in 1361. William, Earl of Northampton, who had a son, Humphrey de Boiiun, Earl of Hereford and Northampton, (father of two daus., Alianore, wife of Thomas, Duke of Gloucester, and Mary, m. to King Henry IV.,) and a dau., Elizabeth, who ?». Richard Fitzalan, Earl of Arundel, and was mother of Thomas, Earl of Arundel, who d. s. p., and three daus., Elizabeth, m. 1st, to William de Montacute; 2ndly, to Thomas, Lord Mowbray ; Srdly, to Sir Gerard Afflete ; and 4thly, to Sir Robert Gousell, Knt.; Margaret, 7«. to Sir Rowland Lenthall; and Alice, m. to John Charlton, Lord Powis. Alianore, in. to James Butler, Earl of Ormonde. Margaret, m. to Hugh Courtenay, Earl of Devon. The King m. 2ndly, in 1299, Margaretj dau. of Philip III., surnamed the Hardy, oi France, by whom he had, Thomas, of Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk, who was invested with the office of earl-marshal of England, being the first so designated, his predecessors having been styled simply marshals. This prince m. Alice, dau. of Sir Roger HaJys, Knt., by whom he left, 1 Margaret, (sole heiress after the demise of her youngest sister,) who was created Duchess of Norfolk. Her grace ?«. John, Lord Segrave, by whom she had a dau. and heiress, Elizabeth, who in. John, Lord Mowbray, and was mother of Margaret de Mowbray, wife of Sir Robert Howard, from whom the Dukes of Norfolk derive. The duchess m. 2ndly, Sir Walter Manny, K.G., and by him she left a dau., Anne, wife of John de Hastings, Earl of Pembroke. 2 Alice, m. to Edward de Montagu ; and d. issueless. Edmund, b. 5 Aug. 1301; surnamed of Woodstock, Earl of Kent; beheaded in 1829, leaving two sons and a dau., by Ids wife, Margaret, dau. of John, and sister and heiress of Thomas, Lord Wake. John^^^'} successively Earls of Kent; both d. issueless. Joan, called the “Fair Maid of Kent,” m. 1st, to William Montacute, Earl of Salisbury ; 2ndly, to Sir Thomas Holland, K.G , Lord Holland; and Srdly, to Edward the Black Prince ; by the latter of whom she had a son. Richard, who s. to the throne, as second of that name. King Edward I. d. at Burgh on the Sands, near Carlisle, 7 July, 1307, and was s. by the Prince of Wales, as EDWARD THE SECOND, surnamed of Carnarvon ; b. 25 April, 1284 : crowned 23 Feb. 1307-8 ; m. 23 Jan. 1307-8, Isabella, dau. of Philip the Fair, King of France, and had issue, Edward, Prince of Wales. John, of Eltham, created Earl of Cornwall ; d. in youth. Joan, m. David Bruce, King of Scotland ; and d. issueless. Eleanor, in.
