![Clattd, Lord Strabane, as 4tli Earl of Abercorn. This nobleman, attending King James II., after the Revolution, from France, was sworn of the privy-council upon his arrival in Dublin. His lordship, on the discomfiture of his royal master at the Boyne, having embarked for France, lost his life in the voyage. In 1691, he had been outlawed, and forfeited the estate and title of Strabane j but the earldom of Abercorn devolved upon his brother, Charles, 5th earl, who, the late lord’s attainder having been reversed, succeeded likewise to the restored title and estate of Strabane; but left no issue at his decease, in 1701, when the honours and estates devolved on his kins¬ man, (revert to Sir George Hamilton, Baronet, of Dona- long, 4th son of James, 1st Eaid of Abercorn,) James Hamilton, who had declined assuming the title of baronet, at the decease of his grandfather, 1769, but was known as Captain Hamilton. This gentleman was in the military service and confidence of James II., but espousing the cause of William, took a distinguished part at the siege of Londonderry against his royal master. Succeeding to the Earldom of Abercorn, his lordship, in virtue thereof, took his seat, in 1706, as a member of the Scottish parlia¬ ment. Ireland was, however, the usual place of his resi¬ dence; and of that realm, 2 Dec. 17O], he was created Baron Mountcastle and Viscount Strabane. The Earl m. in 1686, Elizabeth, dau. and heiress of Sir Robert Reading, Baronet, of Dublin, by whom he had issue nine .sons and four daus.* His lordship d. 28 Nov. 1734, and was suc¬ ceeded by his eldest son, James, 7th earl, who m. in 1/11, Anne, eldest dau. of Col. John Plumer, of Blakesware, co. Herts, and had, with one dan., six sons, of whom, I. James, became 8th earl. II. John, capt. R.N., m. Harriet, dau. of the Right Hon. James Craggs, secretary of state, and widow of Richard Eliot, of Port Eliot, and had a son, John-Jamks, who inherited as 9th earl. III. George, canon of Windsor, m. Ehzabeth, dau. of Lieut. Gen. Richard Onslow, and left issue, 1 George, d. in 1782. 2 Anne, m. to the Right Rev. Dr. Comewall, Bishop of Worcester, and d. in 1795. 3 Mar\’. 4 Harriet, d. unm. 5 Elizabeth, m. in 1793, to Glynn Wynn, Esq., and d. in 1843. 6 Rachael. 7 Jane, m. 1st, in 1791, to William Plumer, Esq.,M.P. j 2ndly, in 1825, to Richard-John Lewin, Esq., R.N.; and 3rdly, in 1828, to Robert-Plumer Ward, Esq. of Gilston Park. She d. in 1831. 8 Cecil, 2nd wife of the 1st Marquess of Abercorn. 9 Isabella, m. to Lord George Seymour. His lordship d. 13 Jan. 1744, and was s. by his eldest son, James, 8th earl. This nobleman was created, 8 Aug. 1786, a peer of Great Britain, by the title of Viscount Ha¬ milton, of Hamilton, co. Leicester, with remainder, in de¬ fault of male issue, to his nephew, John-James Hamilton, and his lordship dying unm., 9 Oct. 1789, that, with all the other honours, devolved upon him, the said John-James, as 9th earl, who was created, 2 Oct. 1/90, Marquess of Abercorn, and subsequently installed a Knight of the Garter. His lordship m. 1st, 20 June, 1779, Catherine, dau. of Sir Joseph Copley, Bart, of Sprotborough, Yorkshire; 2ndly, in 1792, his cousin, Cecil Hamilton,t from whom he was divorced in 1799, and by whom he had an only child, Cecil-Frances, m. in I8I6, to William, 3rd Earl of Wicklow; and 3rdly, in 1800, Anne-Jane, dau. of Arthur, 2nd Earl of Arran, and widow of Henry Hatton, Esq., but by her ladyship (who d. 8 May, 1827) he had no issue. Sir Anthony d. in June, 1733, when the baronetcy devolved upon bis brother, IV. Sir William, who m. Miss Stotherd, only dau. and heiress of Philip Stotherd, Esq. of Terhngton, co. Essex, and had issue, Anthony-Thomas, his successor.
