![In tlu' tliiii layer of cartilapfe of a (lo^^ ci^lit to ten years old, the eonipaet shinin<r suhstanee is relatively scarce, and, as a rule, traversed by vacuoles. Most of the cartilage-cavities con- tain a ])ale <rranular ])r()to])lasm and vesicular nuclei with dark contours, and a varying number of nucleoli. (See Fig. IG.) These features were found in the middle re- gion, between the articu- lar surface and the border of the epiphyseal bone. In young animals, the yellow substance, on an average, occurs the more the nearer to the bone the examina- tion is made. Immediately on the border of the bone the centers of the large cartilage-cavities, which are inclosed by a calcified basis-substance, are occu- pied by large masses of the yellow substance, which in this situation is supplied with numerous vacuoles, and with lower powers appears coarsely granular. Each central lump is suiTOunded l)y a zone of a pale, finely gTanular or structureless substance, which is separated by a light, narrow rim from the Fig. 10. — Cartilage-corptiscles from a Sagittal Section of the Condvle of THE Femur of a Dog, Eight to Ten Years Old.
