Description

Mozart died in Vienna in 1791. Here, some of the figures are dressed in late 18th-century clothes, while others are dressed in the style of around 1820. A violin and a cello are shown

Creator/production credits

O'Neil's principal version was exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, in 1849 (Graves, loc. cit.). That painting or a similar one was acquired by Leeds Art Gallery in 1920. The present version is smaller. A wood engraving after this composition ("Mozarts letzte Augenblicke" in the Bildarchiv Mozarteum Salzburg) is said to be by Richard Bong (1862) after Henry Nelson O'Neil
