KELLY 1135 BROADWAY PUBLISHER NEW YORK BOOK-PLATE, to paste inside the front cover of one’s books, as a formal notice of ownership, has become so much the fashion among book- lovers, that the designing of these plates is now an art by itself. Within the last decade or so, a new school of designers have sprung up who have N\; converted the book-plate from its ancient and lifeless heraldic device into a dainty, decorative conceit, light of touch, and possessing endless variety of expression. The charm of these decorative designs is undeniable ; and, thanks to modern “‘ process” engraving, their cost is so trifling as to place them within reach of every book-buyer’s purse. | American designers of this class of plates have shown highly meritorious ability, and a number are in the front rank when compared with the best book-plate designers of France, Germany, and England. I have collected the represéntative work of Twelve of the leading American designers, aggregating One Hundred Plates, and shall publish these in book-form, with descriptive and critical letter-press by experts, in March, 1902.
