![the little company of surg^eons who volun- teered from New Jersey to go to the front and care for the wounded; and during his absence the U. S. army hosp. at Newark was established. To this institution he was ap- pointed, upon his return, ass't contract surg., a position which he held until Dec, 1863, when he relinquished it in order to accept the post of surg. to the board of enrolment of the fifth congressional district of New Jersey. This latter office he retained until the final suppression of the rebellion, return- ing to private practice in 1865. In 1S70 he was appointed one of the staff of St. Mi- chael's hosp., and in the same year phys. to the Essex co. home for the insane, both of which appointments he continues to hold. He is a member of the N. J. State and Essex CO. med.socs. He was married, April, 1859, to Eveline, daughter of Reynier Van Gies- son, of Mount Clare, N.. J. WARD, JOHN W., Trenton, N. J., was born, Feb. I2lh, 1840, in Salem, N. J. He received his education at Fair- fiekl, Herkimer co., N. Y., where he pursued a full collegiate course. He graduated in the spring of 1S66 from med. dep't univ, of Pa. After practising his profession for about a year he was appointed. May 14th, 1867, as second ass't phys. at the N. J. State lunatic asylum, Trenton. He filled that position for five years, when he was promoted to be lirst ass't phys. of the same institution. After act- ing- in that capacity for a term of four years he was appointed,, on April 1st, 1876, as phys.- in-charge and superintendent of the asylum, succee:ling Dr. Euttoiph. He was married, March 5ih, 1S73, to Horacana B.,. daughter of the late Caleb Sager. TODD, LYMAN BEECHER, Lexing- ton, Ky., was born in Fayette co., Ky., near Lexington, April i6th, 1832, His grand- father. Gen, Levi Todd, came from Virginia in early, perilous limes;, he was a man of aVjility and learning, and was the first clerk of Fayette co. His father, James Clarke Todd, was sheriff of Fayette co.- for sixteen years. Dr. Todd graduated at Centre coll., Danville, Ky., June, 1850, and at the Jeffer- son med, coll., Philadelphia, in 1854, settling down to practice in Lexington. In 1857 he was elected city phys. He is a member of the Lexington and Fayette co. med. soc.;, of the Ky. State med. soc, and treasurer for six years, being elected in 1869. He has con- tributed to Prof. Gross' Medico-Chii-nrgkal jReview, and to the Louisville Medical yottr- nal. Was postmaster at Lexington from 1861 to 1870,, and in 1874 he was appointed 43 surg. to the U. S. military forces stationed at Lexington. Oct. 3d, 1854, was marrierl to Sarah Frances, daughter of Stephen Swift, Esq., of Lexington, Ky. ULKLEY, EDWARD, New Haven, Conn., graduated from the med. dep't of Yale coll. in 1856. He is a member (jf the med. soc. of New Haven co., from which he was a delegate to the Am. med. asso. in 1876; of the med, asso. of New Flaven, of which he has served as secretary and treas- urer; and of the med.. soc. of Conn. Dur- ing the war he served for nine months as acting ass't surg. U.. S. vols. AN RENSSELAER, LEDYARD,, Burlington, N. J., was born there Nov. 20th, 1843. He comes of the well-known Van Rensselaer family of New York, which has for many generations furnished to Nev/ York city and State some of their brightest and most useful citizens. Lie received his classical education at the coll. of N. J., Prince- ton, from which he graduated in the class of 1866; became a student in the med. dep't of the univ. of Pa., Philade]]3hia, and graduated! in the class of 1869. After taking his de- gree he spent twelve months with great profit, in the hospitals in Vienna and Berlin; re- turned to- his native city and commenced; practice in 1871. He was chosen health, officer of the city during the years 1S73 and' 1873, ^i president of the Burlington co.. med. soc, 1875-76. LAM PL FY, CALEB BLISS, Green- ville, Ala., was born at Rockingham, N. C, July 22d, 1830, his parents being of French and English extraction. He was educated in the univ. of S. C, and graduated in medicine from the med. dep't of the univ. of the city of New York in 1S51. First practised in New York city;- then at Hayne- ville; and in Greenville since 1S70. He is the founder of the Butler co., Ala., med. soc;, was first its secretary, then president, and subsequently one of the board of censors; is a member of the med. soc. of the State of Ala., and one of its vice-presidents. During the war served in the army as a suigeon.. Was married, Oct. 8th, 1S56, to Thurza J. Rudolph, of Greenville, and has two children. LANKFORD, A. P., St. Louis, Mo.,, graduated at Jefferson med. coll. in 1866; is prof of surgery and clinical surgery in the Mo. med. coll., and prof of surgical clinics at St. John's and the city hosps., St..
