![Stephen Heard, who was governor of Georgia in 1781, was born in Pike co., Ga., July 26th, 1834. He was educated by private tutors, and also at Pike acad., and studied medicine at the Jefferson med. coll., Philadelphia, where he graduated in March, 1855. Pie estab- lished himself in Barnesville, Pike co., in 1855 ; in 1857 he retired to his farm, but re- turned to Barnesville and resumed general practice in i860. He is a member of the Middle Georgia med. soc, of which he was vice-president in 1874 and president in 1875 ; also of the Georgia med. asso., and was its president in 1871 and 1872. He is ihe author of papers on Acute Endogastritis ; In- fluence of Tubercular Diathesis on the Men- strual Function and Uterine Diseases; Infidelity and Materialism in the Medical Profession, etc., etc. He was captain of a company in the 4lh Georgia battalion Con- federate army in 1861; surgeon 10 the 3d bat- talion Georgia sharpshooters in 1862, and surgeon-in-chief of division in 1863 and 1S64. He was taken prisoner at Missionary Ridge and placed in ch.irge of a Confederate hosp. He suggested in 1872 the organization of a State board of healih, and also of a State in- ebriate asylum, and the legislature in 1874 adopted the former suggestion. In Nov., 1855, he married Sophronia L. Mays, of Barnesville. MAURY, FRANCIS FONTAINE, Philadelphia, Pa., was born at Dan- ville, Ky., August 9th, 1840. His father was a Virginian of French Huguenot extrac- tion. He was educated at Centre coll., Danville, and graduated in 1859. Attended first course of lectures at the med. dep't of univ. of Va.; the second at the Jefferson med. coll., Philadelphia, from which he graduated in 1862. He has always practised in Phila- delphia, preferring surgery. Among his op- erations have been: amputation at the hip- joint, successful ; the first operation for gastrotomy in this country; for stricture of the oesophagus ; excision of the brachial ]ilexus of nerves for painful neuroma of the skin; four times, successfully, for extrophy of the bladder ; twice extirpated the thyroid gland, etc. For two years he edited the Photographic Revieru of Medicine and Sur- gery, and has published various reports of medical and surgical cases. Is surgeon to Jefferson med.coll. hosp., and the Philadelphia hosp. Was surgeon in charge of the U. S. army hosp., Twenty-fourth and South streets, Philadelphia, for a lime during the war. Is lecturer on venereal and cutaneous diseases in the summer school of the Jefferson med. coll.; fellow of the coll. of phys. of Phila- delphia, and member of the patholog. soc. of Philadelphia. Is married and has two children. NICHOLS, HENRY L., Sacramento, Cal., was born at Augusta, Me., Sept. nth, 1823, and graduated M. D. from Bow- doin coll. in 1845. Practised first in Augusta, and moved to Sacramento in 1853. Is a member of the Sacramento co. soc. for med. improvement, and of the med. soc. of the State of California. Was mayor of Sacramento City in 1858 and 1859 ; secretary of state from 1867 to 1871; is a member of the State capi- tal commission ; director of the State prison, and trustee of the State library. Married Sept. 7th, 1847. 'NEILL, ARTHUR, Conneautville, Pa., was born in Half-moon Valley, Centre co., Pa., June 17th, 1837. Was edu- cated at an academy in Franklin, Pa., and graduated from the med. dep't of the univ. of Mich, in 1864. Practised first at Oil City, then Meadville. Is a member of Crawford CO. med. soc, elected president April, 1877. Contributed to Michigan Medical Journal articles on Pulmonary Paresis, and Ob- servation of the Action of Tincture of Arnica in Pneumonia. BAUDUY, J. K., St. Louis, Mo., is pro- fessor of psychological medicine, dis- eases of nervous system and clinical medicine in the Missouri med. coll., and clinical pro- fessor of diseases of the nervous system at St. Vincent's asylum and the city hosp., St. Louis. He is the superintendent of the St. Vincent's institution for the insane ; member of the Am. med. asso.; of the Am. neurolog. asso. LINDSLEY, CHARLES AUGUSTUS, New Haven, Conn., was born at Orange, N. J., August 19th, 1S26. Grad- uated A. B. from Trinity coll., Hartford, Conn., 1849, ^^^ h^s received therefrom the degree of A. M.; studied medicine at the coll. of phys. and surg., New York, and re- ceived degree of M. D. from the med. inst. of Yale coll. in 1852, settling clown there- after to practise in New Haven. Is prof, of materia medica and therapeutics in the med. inst. of Yale coll., and is dean. He is also health officer of New Haven. Is a member of the Conn. med. soc.; honorary member of N.
