![SMITH, DAVID v., Springfield, Mfiss., was educated at Yale coll., from which he graduated A. B. in 1851. His degree of M. D. was conferred by the Jefferson med. coll., Philadelphia, in 1853. He is a member of the Am. public health asso.; of the Mass. med. asso., to which he was admitted in 1854. He is prof, of the theory and practice of medicine in the med. institute of Yale coll.; post surg. at Springfield armory; phys. to the home for the friendless ; consult, phys. and surg. to the me'd. board of the gen. hosp. soc. Conn.; consult, phys. to the New Haven dispens., and exajn. surg. to the pen- sions bvireau. His contributions to medical L'terature comprise : Remarks on Fractures, American Medical Times, i860; Practice of Surgery, ibid., 1862. QARGENT, JOSEPH, Worcester, Mass., vj was educated at Harvard imiv., from which he graduated A. B. in 1834, and M. D. from the med. dep't in 1837. He is a mem- ber of the Mass. med. soc, to which lie was admitted in 1840; a corres. member of the Boston soc. for- med. improvement; of the Mass. med. benevolent asso.; of the Worces- ter dist. med. soc, of which he is a councillor. He is consult, phys. to the Worcester city hosp, BROWN, GEORGE W., Port Carbon, Pa., graduated from the Jefferson med. coll., Philadelphia, in 1844. Is a member of the Schuylkill co. med. soc, of which he has been president, vice-president 1876-77; ^ ]->ermanent member of the med. soc. of the State of Pa. since 1867. SHANNON, NATHANIEL, Cape Eliza- beth, Me., was born at Pittsfield, N. H., Aug. 28th, 1822; the son of Dr. Thomas Shannon, of Moultonborough, N. H. Edu- cated at Wolf borougli, Sandwich, New Hamp- ton and Gilmanton acads., he studied medi- cine at the med. dep'ts of Harvard univ. and Dartmouth coll., graduating in Oct., 1848. First practised at Sandwich, and then at Loudon, N. H. Is a member of the Me. med. asso., and of the Cumljerland co. med. soc, of which he was president in 1876. RICHARDSON, WILLIAM LEE, Montrose, Pa., was born in Harford, Susquehanna co.. Pa., June 7th, 1815. He attended lectures at the coll. of phys. and surg. of the v,-estei-n dist. of N. Y., session of 1839-40; at Geneva med. coll. in 1840-41 ; and at the Jefferson med. coll. in 1847-48 and 1857-58, graduating at the last-named institution in 1848. IBegan practice in Brooklyn, Pa., with his preceptor, Dr. B. Richardson; in 1854 removed to Nesque- honing, and in 1867 to Montrose. Is a mem- ber of the Susquehanna med. soc, and its president since 1872; of the med. soc. of the State of Pa., vice-president in 1871 ; and of the Am. med. asso. Was a delegate from the med. soc. of Pa. to the International med. congress. Married Mary Fish, Jan. 7th, TAGGART, WILLIAM IIEMBEL, Philadelphia, Pa., was born at Win- chester, Va., July 15th, 1S30. He was edu- cated at the univ. of Pa., graduating from the dep't of arts in 1849, ^<^1 from the med. dep't in 1852. Has always practised in Philadel- l^hia and made a specialty of the study of ma- teria medica. Is a member of the acad. of nat. sciences. Was prof, of materia medica in the Philadelphia coll. of med., and in the Pa. med. coll. During the war he served for three months as surg. of the loth Pa. infantry; for three years as surg. of the 2d Pa. cavalry, and six months as act. ass't surg. in the U. S. navy. Is not married. WYMAN, MORRILL, Cambridge, Mass., graduated A. B. from Har- vard univ. in 1833, and M. D. from its med. dep't in 1837. He is a member of the Mass. med. soc, to which he was admitted in 1837; of the Cambridge soc formed, improvement, and of the Am. acad. of arts and sciences. His published writings include : A Treatise on Ventilation, Cambridge, 1846 ; Aut- umnal Catarrh, New York, 1872, and Bos- ton, 1876. McPHEETERS, WILLIAM M., St. Louis, Mo., was born in Raleigh, N. C, Dec. 3d, 1815, son of Rev. Wm. Mc- Pheeters, D. D., of that city. He was edu- cated at the univ. of N. C, Chapel Hill, and graduated from the med. dep't of the univ. of Pa. in 1840. For one year thereafter he was resident physician at Blockley hosp., Philadelphia, and then settled in St. Louis. From 1848 to 1862 he was prof, of materia medica and therapeutics in the St. Louis med. coll., and from 1866 to 1874 in the Mb. med. coll. He was the editor of the St. Louis Medical and Surgical yonrnal {'cnxn 1843 ^o 1861. He published a History of the Cholera Epidemic in St. Louis in 1849, and many reports of cases. From 1856 to 1861 he was surgeon to the U. S. marine hosp. at St. Louis.
