    pies, I may cite the story of the introduction of amyl nitrite by Brunton, which was based on his noting its effects on the blood-pressure in experi- ments by Gamgee designed to elucidate the forma- tion of methaemoglobin. Again, Liebreich, work- ing upon the question of the powers of the tissues to decompose organic substances, injected chloral, previously untried, observed the resulting effects on the brain and introduced chloral hydrate into therapeutics; this led to the study and to the use of the whole group of modern hypnotics. Saul was not the last who, going forth to seek his father's asses, found a kingdom, and it would seem that casual observations correctly appreciated may be of as great profit to therapeutics as investiga- tions aimed directly at some definite phenomenon in disease.
