Biographical note
The attribution of these lectures to T. C. Hope is based on internal evidence, especially as regards the adoption of Lavoisier's theories, and the rejection of 'phlogiston' He had obtained his M.D. at Edinburgh in 1787, and was the first professor of chemistry at Glasgow University, 1787-1789. After being assistant professor of chemistry to Joseph Black [1728-1799] at Edinburgh University, he succeeded him in the chair, a post which he retained until his retirement in 1843. 'A. Davidson' is inscribed in pencil inside the upper cover and is probably the writer of the MS.
