    PREFACE. At the close of the year 1841, in consequence of con- tinued hostilities with the Chinese; uncertainty as to their termination; prevalence of disease in, and augmentation of, force; the Lords of the Admiralty directed a floating- hospital to be fitted, and despatched with all speed to the seat of war. With that view, the Minden was put into commission, the command of the ship being given to Captain Quin; the administration of the medical depart- ment, comprising an able surgeon, five intelligent assist- ants, and an ample subordinate staff, was entrusted to the writer. The Minden, a seventy-two-gun ship, built of teak, strong and spacious, was well fitted for the purpose, in respect of size, structure, and height between decks; and no expense or pains which appeared requisite to complete her at all points for the special object for which she was ordered, were spared.
