Actor, and (from 1887) producer and theatre manager. Produced (among other plays) Ibsen's An enemy of the people (1893), Trilby (1895), and Shaw's Pygmalion (1914); builder of Her Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket, in London. In 1904 he established the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Oxford dictionary of national biography)
