    plainly taiiglit ns that, after all we ean do, there is but little confidence for safety to be placed in man. They ought also to have taught us, if we knew it not before, that we can securely plaee that confidence alone in God. They ought, farther, to lead us care- fully to ask ourselves whether we feel that that confi- dence is ours. I am not an alarmist. I am sure we all feel that everything, whieh political wisdom could suggest, or military skill execute, has been carried out for our safety. In this place we are more favoured than our brethren at many other sta- tions. We are not without a well-tried, though it may be a small band of brave defenders, of our own countrymen, prepared to shed their heart’s blood for our safety and the honour of our country; the descendants of those who from age to age, in every portion of the globe, have gained victories for Eng- land, often against fearful odds; many of them the very same men who, in this eountry and in Europe, have added lustre to our arms. Far are we, I am sure, from thinking, brethren, that if the worst we can dread were to happen, our case is desperate. What Englishmen have done, Englishmen can do; but what they have done was by the help of God; and for whatever they may have to do, they must ask, with humble hearts, for the same gracious assistance, or their efforts will be in vain. ]3ut suppose—I will not say, that we had been overcome—but that we had been surprised, as others, by those treacherous foes, of whom too many lurk about us in the guise of friends, before our prepara- tions. were complete, or we even feared the presence of danger.
