Latin verses painted on canvas at top: "Clarus doctor erat Margati ad littoris undas, Insignis medicus hic et ubique fuit. Talis erat formâ, et dum vixit, talis amictu, Qualem speccanti picta tabella refert" (He was a famous doctor at the waters of the Margate shore, here and everywhere he was a notable physician. In his appearance was he such, and, while he lived, in his dress was he such as the painted picture recalls to the viewer)
