But what is of ft ill greater importance, all games of hazard are ftriCtly prohibited ; and in other games the party who lofes above fix florins (about nine fhillings of our money) incurs a confiderable fine. An ex¬ cellent regulation! and I was inform¬ ed, that thefe laws are not, like ours of the fame kind, mere cyphers, but are well obferved. The principal article of exportation is wine; of which they make a large quantity, the country abound¬ ing in vineyards; and as the canton furnifties but little corn, they procure it from Suabia in exchange for their wine. In the town there are fome, but not very confiderable, manufactures of linen, cotton, and filk : their commerce, however, is very flourilhing.
