    speedily as possible after their becoming apparent. Rules which ought carefully to be observed for the preservation of the health of seamen during long voyages, and of military men, and all other persons going from a cold climate to a warm one, are also laid down. It seems necessary to mention, that the doses advised in the various prescriptions throughout the work are intended for adults, except where particularly specified for children or infants; and also further to say, that, in general, women require a smaller quantity of medicine than men, and those of a sanguine temperament, than such as are of the melancholic. In regulating the doses, due consideration must therefore be given to the sex, temperament, habit of body, and peculiarity of constitu- tion (should any exist), of the patient, as well as to the nature of the disease, as no correct general rule can be laid down. Having nearly attained my seventy-fifth year, I can- not look forward to a much longer extension of my existence, and it is probable I may not live to that period when another or tenth edition of this work may be required. I will therefore here offer my professional brethren my best and sincere thanks for the very favour- able reception which it has met with in every part of the British dominions, both at home and abroad, and likewise in the different States of North America, the same number of editions having been published at New York as have issued from the London press.
