    with a lack of evidence and of logic which only the materialistic complex can explain. Further¬ more, Freud and his followers are not merely speculative philosophers. As psycho-analysts they deal with neurotic patients by revealing the complexes by which they are affected so as to give them a fresh start in life. What sort of a start can be founded on the underlying theory that a man cannot really help himself but is at the mercy of determinants over which he has no control ? We must consider his “ argument ” a little more fully in order to appreciate its futility. This very futility—this acceptance of a logic which is clearly fallacious—is clear evidence of the complex. In this book, The Psychopathology of Every-day Life, Freud has shown how a number of actions in every-day life are regulated by determinants in the unconscious mind. For instance, he shows that the forgetting of a proper name (which we are apt to do from various causes) is often motivated by a repression caused by some unpleasant association which the remembrance of the name would bring to mind. He tells us he has analysed a large number of cases of forgetting, of which he gives in detail several, and finds that they usually lead to “ intimate and painful things in the person analysed Referring to his own ex-
