    a very extensive series of books relating to the church, its services and controversies at the time of the Reformation. No. 1993 is the E’nchi- vidion secundum usum Sarum; No. 3105, the Liber Hymnorum according to the use of the same church ; and there are writings of all the more eminent Reformers in the original editions, Tyndale, Joye, Ridley, Bale, Crowley, and Coverdale, including a copy of Cover- dale’s Bible. The Collection is also singularly rich in the writings of the English, Scotch, and Irish Catholics, from the time when the Re- formation was firmly éstablished in England; such as Alan, Parsons, Watson, &c. It is equally rich in the works which were produced in the early Puritan controversy: in the Reformed Church by such men as Cartwright and Udall, and especially Penry, and those who formed the Mar-Prelate community. There will also be found the writings on the other side, not-so much by the divines of the time as the wits, Nash, Lilly, and others, whose writings may be perused not merely with a view to the points in controversy at that period, but also for the light they throw on the language and literary history of the time. There are also many rare Sermons, funeral and others, preached by the divines of the reigns of Elizabeth and James the First ; and atten- tion may also be directed to the very singular collection of early Bulls of Indulgences circulated in England, No. 834. Two articles under the head of Funeral Orations are deserving of especial notice ;—-No. 844, Esequie del Divino Michelagnolo Buonaroiti, con lOrazione Funerale di Varchi; and No. 1027, fl Funerale d Agostin Ca- YAaCCIO. Under the head of Law and Jurisprudence, the books most useful in practice have already been sold in a separate sale: but there still remain for the present Catalogue many valuable works of writers especially on the English Constitution ; and there is one book of great curiosity,—a portion of the Year-Books, with notes in the hand of Lord Bacon. ) The books in the Classes of Natural and Physical Science, books in Geology, Mineralogy, and Botany, are contained in a separate Catalogue: but it has been thought expedient to place in the present Catalogue the books which pertain to the early history of science, and which are chiefly valued as affording the materials for that his- tory. Amongst these are reckoned works in Astrology, Alchymy: Witchcraft, &c., as well those written by the adepts in a serious spirit, as those written for the purpose of exposing the misrepresentations
