Whitehead and the Medical Officer of Health. Care of Old People. The Public Health Department has continued as far as possible to meet the needs of old people during the year. Although it is not altogether easy to assess accurately the present position, it would appear that we are getting to know of necessitous cases earlier and are thus able to bring in statutory and voluntary services more rapidly and tthus more effectively. The Council appointed an attendant for bathing housebound old people in March, and her work has proved to be of inestimable value. Besides bathing duties the attendant is able to warn the Public He Department of any deterioration in old persons and their surroundings. She has proved to be a vital link in the work of the Department and has given loyal support to the Old People's Visitor. Housebound old persons have also been greatly assisted by the Old People's Visitor and she continues to work closely with her colleagues in the Public Health Department and also the staff of the Divisional Health Department In addition constant touch has to be maintained with the Women's Voluntary Service, the London County Council Welfare Officers, National Assistance Board and many other bodies.
