Old vellum. 6 ll., 148 pp. Illustrated with very many fine woodcuts, not only of an architectural nature, but also showing most interesting pictures of all activities con- nected with building, showing the craftsmen actually at work with their machinery, also pictures of fortification machinery, of sundials. Paris, 1781-86 £,32/10/- Folio. 4 vols. Finely bound in old russia, gilt panel on sides surrounding Initials XS, surmounted by a crown, gilt classical border, fully gilt back, g.e. With 284 engraved plates, 15 headpieces, 96 culs de lampe and other decorations by Choffard, Cochin, Desmoulins, Fragonard, and other masters of the time, and engraved by various artists. One of the most lavishly illustrated works of the 18th century, executed at the expense of the author, who designed some of the decorations himself The present set is in fine state, has the phallus plate and the 14 extra plates of medals, but it lacks one plate (no. 33 in vol. IV of a view near Catagna),. 67 Saint-Non (Richard de) Recueil de Griffonis, vues, paysages, fragments antiques, et sujets historiques graves a l’eau forte et au lavis par ’Abbe de Saint-Non d’apres differents maitres. s.l.n.d. (Paris, ca. 1780) : £24 Folio, 19th century half green morocco, binding a little rubbed. Engraved titie and 168 pages, some containing several subjects. The engravings are etchings and aquatints by Saint-Non, many after drawings by Fragonard and Hubert Robert of picturesque scenes in Italy, Italian pictures, fragments of the antique and other objects which had struck these artists on their travels. A rare and delightful book, showing how the French artists of the 18th century saw Italy. There were two issues, one with and one without a date and Cohen states that the number of plates vary. The most complete set he had ever seen apparently contained 190 plates. The titlepage is a little spotted and the paper slightly scraped, removing a letter or two of text, but all the beautiful plates are in good condition. 68 Schrenck (Jac.) Agricola, 1601 £27/10/- Folio. 19th century dark morocco, sides gilt in the style of the ‘“‘ Lyonnese ” type of 16th century binding. ‘Titlepage, portrait, 4 leaves of letter press and 125 full-page copper engravings within decorative borders of famous statesmen and warriors by Dom. Custodis. The descriptive text is printed within a decorative woodcut border. These engravings were made after the famous collection of armour belonging to the Archduke Ferdinand and housed in the fortress of Ambras, near Innsbruck (now at the Belvedere, in Vienna). The designs were made by Giov. Battista Fontana (1525-89), Viennese Court painter and engraved by Custodis.—Outer blank margin of title strengthened, otherwise an excellent copy. A manuscript index has been added at the end. This copy formerly belonged to F. H. Cripps-Day and has a few pencil notes by him. 69 Serlio (S.)
